Synopsis

We continue our 80th season with a hit that is sure to entertain.

9 to 5, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in 1979, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot!

While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down.

Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?

10 •  Inclusive Casting

In reference to the character descriptions that follow—most characters we encounter currently are on the gender binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But, however limiting the descriptions are, the Morgan-Wixson Theatre is actively committed to casting an inclusive show that reflects our real world community.

In our continued attempts to offer opportunities to those often

ignored by theater history, we understand that many official casting descriptions are either limiting or traditionally cast in preferenced ways that ignore the multitudes of performers that shine on our stages.

Because of this, we encourage and are actively seeking performers of ANY and ALL identities, including performers with disabilities, performers presenting of all races and ethnicities, and those who identify as transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming.

Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

As part of our mission, we are actively committed to casting an inclusive show that reflects the community.

11 • Character Breakdowns

VIOLET NEWSTEAD (Lead): Smart, efficient, no nonsense. Her hard exterior hides her real warmth.  Sharp wit, resilient. She holds the office together, fixing crises while receiving no credit yet still has an underlying optimism. (Vocal range: F3 to D5)

JUDY BERNLEY (Lead): Timid and eager-to-please at the start but her confidence grows. She has the largest character arc and must show both vulnerability and strength as she ventures into a new life all on her own.  She possesses a quiet tenacity and emotional depth that blossoms into power and independence. (Vocal range: Ab3 to F5)

DORALEE RHODES (Lead): Sexy as hell Texas country gal. Warm, personable yet often misjudged because of her good looks. Compassionate, determined, cheerful and dreamy. She embodies the spirit of Dolly Parton but is NOT a Dolly impersonator. (Vocal range: G3 to E5)

FRANKLIN HART (Lead): President of Consolidated Industries. Smarmy, pompous, his own biggest fan. He abuses his power, crosses boundaries, and leads a boys club but he’s a bit bumbling and awkward, a Michael Scott. The audience should not hate him despite his aggravating choices. (Vocal range: C3 to Gb4)

ROZ KEITH (Supporting): Mr. Hart’s administrative assistant. Office goody goody with just a little bit of power. She is intensely loyal to Mr. Hart, an overly rigid rule follower with excellent comedic timing. (Vocal range: G3 to C5)

JOE (Supporting): Accountant at Consolidated Industries. Romantically pursuing Violet though he is clearly her junior. Earnest, warm, respectful - he is one of the few “good guys.” Stable but not boring, sensitive but not fragile, emotionally grounded. (Vocal range: B2 to G4)

DWAYNE (Featured): Doralee’s doting respectful husband. Supportive, encouraging, genuinely a “good guy.” 100% Texas. (Vocal range: E2 to G4)

DICK (Featured): Judy’s average not-so-great ex husband.  Self-absorbed, immature, and unfaithful. Charming on the surface but ultimately shallow and condescending. Dick believes he’s much more impressive than he actually is.

JOSH (Featured): Violet’s teen-presenting son (or daughter). Smart, sarcastic, has a good relationship with his mom even if occasionally embarrassed by her intensity. Dry wit and wise beyond his years.

TINSWORTHY (Cameo): Chairman of the Board - arrives in the final scene. He is distinguished, eccentric, has a strong presence yet is surprisingly open minded.

ENSEMBLE: The heartbeat of Consolidated Industries. Ensemble to portray a variety of named characters including secretaries (Maria, Kathy, Margaret) and featured speaking roles (Missy, Bob Enright, Detective, Doctor, Candy Striper, etc.)

Looking for a diverse group of strong singers, dancers and comedic actors who will create and define their own specific characters and showcase the bustling, high-energy environment  of Consolidated Industries.
