About us:

​

WHO:  Our respected and unique 200 seat, volunteer-run Santa Monica-based community theater has provided award-winning, thought-providing, and entertaining theater for more than 77 years. To learn about our dynamic and impactful Inaugural New Works Festival in 2021, please visit this page.

WHAT:  The goal of the Festival is to welcome a wide range of genres and styles of plays. We are committed to the New Works Festival mission to amplify marginalized voices and expand representation on the stage. No fees were charged to playwrights to submit plays. The New Works Festival will occur September - October, 2023, live and in person – further details will be announced as we develop our Festival slate and programming. Playwrights whose works are selected will be offered optional opportunities to meet at informal Playwrights’ Gatherings to be held this summer prior to the festival. Playwrights who wish to join us in our space can interact, reflect upon and explore their work in a collaborative and supportive environment, hosted by our theater and Dramaturg.

THE READING PROCESS: Our volunteer readers represent a wide spectrum of theater knowledge and experience, both professional and community-based. We plan to conduct blind readings during our reading and jury phases through May within our capacity to guarantee readings of 100 plays that most closely meet the mission of the New Works Festival.

WHERE: The Festival and Playwrights’ Gatherings will be held live and in person at The Morgan-Wixson Theater, located in Santa Monica, California.

WHEN (PROJECTED SCHEDULE):
- Call for applications and submissions February 23
- Submission due date: March 9, 2023 at 11:59 pm PST
- Reading and jury phase: March-May 2023
- Notification to finalists: May 2023

- Festival information updates announced: May 2023
- Playwrights’ Gatherings: Summer 2023
- NWF 2023: September - October 2023
